Proxy Access

Proxy Access for Adults
Some patients find it helpful for a trusted person to have access to their online GP record. This may be a family member, next of kin, close friend, or carer. This is known as proxy access.
Proxy access allows someone other than the patient to view and manage parts of their GP online services account. The proxy will have their own login details and will not use the patient’s account.
Proxy access is commonly used by:
  • Parents or recognised carers of young children
  • Recognised carers of adults who need support managing their healthcare
Proxy users may be able to:
  • Book and manage appointments
  • Order repeat prescriptions
  • View parts of the medical record (depending on the level of access granted)
Please see the link below for more information about proxy access and how to apply.

Sharing Information Without Proxy Access
There may be times when a patient wishes their healthcare to be discussed with a family member or next of kin. This does not require proxy access, but it does require the patient’s verbal consent or prior agreement, which will be recorded in their medical notes.
Proxy Access for Children and Young People
At our practice, we take your child’s confidentiality and rights very seriously. NHS guidance requires us to review parental proxy access at key ages to ensure young people are appropriately involved in decisions about their healthcare.

What to Expect as Your Child Approaches Age 11
When your child turns 11 years old, parental proxy access to their online medical records will automatically stop.
This is part of the NHS commitment to protecting young people’s confidentiality and supporting their growing independence in managing their health.
  • Parents/guardians and the child will receive a letter around their 11th birthday explaining this change.
  • If parents/guardians wish to continue proxy access, they may reapply by completing a form together with their child.
Once approved, proxy access allows parents/guardians to:
  • Book and manage appointments
  • Order repeat medication

Proxy Access and Contact Details at Age 16
When a young person reaches 16 years old, we are legally required to:
  • Remove all parental/guardian proxy access from their medical records
  • Ensure that only the young person’s own telephone number and email address are listed as their contact details
At this point, the young person may apply for their own online access if they wish.
Please note:
We cannot share information or communicate with parents/guardians about a young person’s care without their explicit consent once they are 16.
