Diagnosis of PCOS

The name “Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome” is a bit confusing –

  • It does not mean you have lots of cysts on your ovaries
  • You can actually have normal looking ovaries and still have PCOS
  • Equally you can have “cystic” looking ovaries and NOT have PCOS

Confused…?

A diagnosis of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, is made when you have two, or more, of the following:

  • irregular, infrequent periods or no periods at all
  • an increase in facial or body hair and/or blood tests that show higher testosterone levels than normal
  • an ultrasound scan that shows polycystic ovaries.

Polycystic Ovaries

Does not mean you have lots of cysts. It actually means you have a lot more follicles (baby eggs) which fail to mature.
